Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game - FAQ/Play Guide

The guide to...TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2: THE ARCADE GAME

Description:

Year - 1990
Company - Konami
Platform - NES
Genre - Action
Subgenre - Beat-'em-up

About the game:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released just after the insanely difficult turtles
game released for the NES and PC earlier in the very same year. The plot is somewhat
losely based on the first season; you rescue April from the building (first episode),
fight mousers and Baxter Stockman in the sewer (third episode), defeat Shredder and
Krang in the technodrome (fifth episode), and a few other memorable events.

This was actually one of the first video games I ever played! :-)

===Basic Overview===

Graphics (5/5):

This game had 16-bit graphics, which was considered somewhat high-tech during the
late 80s. Yes, the Turbographix-16 and Genesis were out, but most gamers were still
stuck to the good ol' NES like glue, so this was seen as a good change. This game
was eventually ported to NES, Game Boy, PC, Commodore-64, and a few other
platforms due to its popularity. They even released it to XBox-360 in 2007 (probably
to celebrate the movie that had just come out).

Music (5/5):

Spectacular music, the tunes are all very upbeat and cheerful-sounding, yet also
thrilling. My personal favorite is the tune played during the skateboarding stage!

Sound Effects (5/5):

The sound effects in the game are very realistic-sounding and fun. The game also
seems to have a good sense of humor, expressed through the sound-- the turtles,
the bosses, and a few regular enemies speak lines of dialouge throughout the game,
adding to the feel that you're playing a cartoon!

Control (5/5):

Very solid! Not much of a problem.

Difficulty (3/5):

You'll probably lose a lot lof quarters to this game, but it's not very long, so you'll
probably be able to finish this with 20-something quarters and good effort.

Replayability (4/5):

Even thouugh once it's done-- it's done, you just get the ending; it's still extremely
fun, and I always go back to this one every now and then. It's a great play; you
don't want to miss out on it!

Overall (5/5):

This game is great in nearly all areas; cool graphics, fun music, witty lines of
dialouge and, of course-- NINJA TURTLES!! My only problem is that it's a bit
short, but then again; maybe that's a good thing-- look how difficult the NES
port of this game was. COWABUNGA!!

=== The Turtles ===

Leonardo
Age: 17
Color: Blue
Weapon: Katana
Description: The most mature and experienced of the turtles, his katanas are
very strong.

Michaelangelo
Age: 15
Color: Orange
Weapon: Nunchaku
Description: The wild and crazy party turtle. Has a huge appetite for pizza and
uses a lot of 80s slang and surfer-speak. His nunchaku are a very average weapon.

Donatello
Age: 15
Color: Purple
Weapon: Bo Staff
Description: The technical genius of the turtles, he designed and created the
turtle van and the turtle blimp; he even sent the Technodrome back to Dimension X!
His Bo Staff has the longest range of the turtles.

Raphael
Age: 16
Color: Red
Weapon: Sais
Description: The sarcastic, witty turtle. Raphael often makes wisecracks and has
quite a few hormonal problems. His sais are the swiftest of the turtles' weapons, but
they have the shortest range.

=== Enemies ===

Purple Foot Soldiers - Some use hand-fighting, some throw blades, some throw
bombs, some carry huge missiles, or use spears. They are the most common
enemies in the game.

Red Foot Soldiers - These ones are not very skilled in ninjistu and use machine guns
instead of traditional weaponry.

Blue Foot Soldiers - The second most common type. Their varieties either throw knives
or ride motorcycles...

White Foot Soldiers - These advanced ninjas use katana swords.

Yellow Foot Soldiers - These ones use boomerangs.

Magenta Foot Soldiers - These ones are equipped with either large hammers or
huge bombs.

Cyan Foot Soldiers - Most of them throw snowballs, but a few choose to ride
helicopters.

Roadkill Rodneys - Those lovable robots from the second episode! They can shoot
laser beams or they can lash out electrified chains! Watch out; jump kicks are the
most effective on them.

Mousers - They are the smallest enemies. They take only 2 hits, but they are a
major pest if they latch onto your arm. Press buttons to get 'em off you!

Frosty the Hitman - These snowbots appear to be bouncing snowmen-- a few hits
later, they reveal themselves to be sinister sentinels shooting rockets at you!

Black Hawks - These helicopters are driven by cyan footsoldiers in stage 4-2.

Robot Walkers - These things drop from the air and fire energy discs at you!

Hanging Cannons - These things move from left to right just firing laser beams all
day! A few hits will calm them down.

Blades - These intergalactic ninja masters hop around using telekenesis and
throw kunai knives!

Scorpiobots - These robotic scorpions can shoot lasers from their tails! Not
only that, but they can sting too...

=== Items ===

Pizza Box - Restores your health; several may appear depending on how much
health you have.

1-Up - Get one after you gain 200 points!

=== THE GAME ===

Intro: As the turtles watch from a skyscraper, April's apartment is set aflame!
Splinter sends the turtles to the building to save April...

Stage 1: The Burning Building

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Blue, Red, White), Roadkill Rodneys

Boss: Rocksteady

Tips:

- Don't bother trying to destroy the falling steel balls; you can't! They will hurt
you badly if touched. Just jump over them.

- You will not get hurt by walking into the fire. (Odd)

Fighting Rocksteady: Rocksteady is one of the easier bosses in the whole game.
He is very strong, but very clumsy. Stand behind/below him and just slash away;
but not for too long. Jump out of the way of his gunshots, and jump-kick him; but
never twice in a row (he can counter-attack them).

Cut Scene: Shredder kidnaps April, jumps out of the building, and the Turtles follow
loosely after...

Stage 2.1: Downtown New York

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Yellow)

Boss: Bebop

Tips:

- When footsoldiers pop up from manholes and throw the covers at you, you can easily
deflect them with your weapon.

- This is the first stage in which you can really take advantage of your surroundings;
signs and fire hydrants can all be whacked to be sent flying at your opoonents.

- Get the pizza for health!

Fighting Bebop: The battle begins with some bantering between the turtles and Bebop.
He uses his gun much more often than Rocksteady, and don't try to jump-kick him too
often-- he never hesitates to uppercut you out of the way. So, basically use the same
strategy as with Rocksteady, but be a little more evasive (try to stay a bit further from him).

Cut Scene: The turtles jump into the nearby manhole and into the sewers...

Stage 2.2: The Sewer

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Magenta, Purple, Blue, White), Mousers

Boss: Baxter Stockman

Tips:

- The magenta hammer foot soldiers have a very long-range attack.

- Stay in the water when you get to the snapping gates!

- Beware of the flying missles that come out of the water, they can be a pain! However, if
you're good enough, you might be able to destroy them! They will give you bonus points.

- Jump kicks are the most effective way to take out a mouser.

Fighting Baxter Stockman: Baxter flies in a space-ship like object above the ground, while
dispensing mousers. This means you'll need to jump-kick to defeat him. He can't directly attack
you, but the mousers do. You can also destroy the mousers he drops for extra points!

Cut Scene: Baxter Stockman is mutated into a fly, and he and Shredder are shown alongside
a captive April, taunting "Tonight I dine on Turtle Soup"...

Stage 3.1: Snowy Central Park

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Cyan, Yellow)

Boss: Tora

Tips:

- Watch out for the falling ice blocks!! You can tell where they are going to land by the shadows
they cast before they hit the ground.

- Jump outta the way of snowdozers!

- If you see a lump-like mound of snow on the ground, stay away from it, it's really a hole!

Fighting Tora: His attack style is pretty simple-- he throws ice blocks and then he clocks you.
Just jumpkick him to hurt him and get the ice blocks out of his hands. That easy.

Cut Scene: The turtles destroy the weather-maker and head into the city. "Spring is Here!",
says one of the turtles.

Stage 3.2: The Parking Lot

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Red)

Boss: Baxter Stockman the Fly

Tips:

- Be careful around some of the cars; a few of them will drive out of their places later on in
the stage; which will hurt you if you're in the way!

- Slice a hole in an oil barrel and watch it smoke; make sure there are foot soldiers nearby
and get outta the way; the barrel will explode and kill all of the foot soldiers that were standing
by it!

Fighting Baxter Stockman: He's back, and this time, he's a FLY! He's relatively easy compared
to the last few bosses, so here the strategy-- stand underneath the center of his body. The laser
bullets he shoots only go outside of his body, you can jump up and kick him. He also uses a combat
flyswatter, but not very often.

Cut Scene: The turtles rescue April O' Neal and take off in the Turtle Van. April kisses one of
the turtles and says "I owe you one!"...

Stage 4.1: The Highway

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Magenta, Blue), Roadkill Rodneys

Boss: None

Tips:

- Try to stay to the side of the road; occasionally a car will drive by which will run you over if
you're in its path!

- Try to get behind the footsoldiers with spears!

- When the footsoldiers at the end of the stage throw tires at you; deflect them in the same
way that you did with the manhole covers.

Cut Scene: The turtles jump into the air and onto their skateboards...

Stage 4.2: The Express Lane (Skateboarding)

Enemies: Black Hawks, Foot Soldiers (Red)

Boss: None

Tips:

- Avoid the fire coming from the Black Hawks, it's very powerful.

- The purple Black Hawks drop bombs.

Cut Scene: The turtles catch up with the Turtle Van and hop inside; the van veers
off the express lane and crashes into the hidden factory below... Splinter is kidnapped
by a group of mousers.

Stage 5: The Secret Factory

Enemies: Mousers, Foot Soldiers (Purple, Magenta, Red), Robot Walkers, Hanging Cannons

Boss (1): Tubular Transport

Boss (2): Lt. Granitor the Stone Warrior

Tips:

- Stay on the ledge/path above the laser-cannons.

- The most effective way to take out a pair of Hanging-Cannons are to stand
between them and slice them apart!

- Use the oil barrels in this stage to your advantage.

Fighting the Tubular Transport: These pesky robotic mosquitos will drill their way into your
path halfway through the level. Each one takes only one hit. They fire spontaneous
but weak lasers onto the ground.

Fighting Lt. Granitor: Granitor is the first of the stone warriors that you fight in the
game. He is guarding Splinter. He is a very hard boss and being made of stone, has
a very high endurance level. You want to avoid attacking in front of him, but rather,
below or behind him. He can shoot you with his flamethrower or he can give you a bad
punching. He will groan and fall to pieces when you have killed him...

Cut Scene: Splinter is loosened from the ropes and says "Thank You, My Turtles."
The turtles jump into the elevator shaft below and take it up to Shredder's secret dojo...

Stage 6: Shredder's Dojo

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple), Blades, Scorpiobots

Boss (1): Mystic Tigers

Boss (2): Shogun

Tips:

- Beware of the bamboo spikes that retract back and forth through certain floors.
Avoid them at all costs!

- Strike the candlesticks to make them fly at enemies.

Fighting the Mystic Tigers: These things are pretty easy if you use the right
strategy; just stand directly in front of them and hit them with your weapon--
they'll fly backwards and try again; this makes it easy to repeat this technique
many times without a scratch!

Fighting Shogun: This intergalactic ninja warrior is a huge pain! His first phase
involves him using his scythe, don't stand directly in front of him when you attack!
The second phase will have his head fly off and start floating around and spinning;
the head and body are separate entities. The final phase will have him flashing red
and his head and body reunited. When defeated, this dude turns to stone and
crumbles to pieces.

Cut Scene: The floor at the very end of the dojo collapses and the turtles fall into
a cave below. They find the Technodrome and jump inside...

Stage 7.1: The Technodrome

Enemies: Foot Soldiers (Purple, Yellow, Blue, White), Hanging Cannons, Roadkill Rodneys, Robot Walkers

Boss: General Traag the Stone Warrior

Tips:

- Watch out for the cannons that pop up from the ground! They can freeze you and
inflict a large amount of damage.

- On the large elevator going down, the large steel balls will be falling from above. You
can tell where they are going to land by where their shadows are.

Fighting General Traag: He has the same basic attack style as Granitor; only he's
even tougher! Instead of fire, he shoots rockets from his gun! Luckily, these can be
destroyed, but the penalty is even worse if you get hit. Just try to avoid them. Hit him
as much as possible until he is destroyed. Also, take it easy on the jump-kicks.

Stage 7.2: The Dimension X Portal

Boss (1): Krang

Boss (2): The Shredder

Fighting Krang: He's the largest boss in the whole game, but he's easier than you think.
The best strategy is to stay directly below the center of his body and do a jump-kick.
It's even more easy if you have a friend helping you!

Fighting the Shredder: The final boss... The more players involved in this one, the more
confusing the fight is... You see, Shredder creates clones of himself for most of the battle.
You can tell which Shredder is a fake by if it dies easily. Also, watch out for Shredder's
most dangerous move ever: the retro-mutagen beam. It will mutate you back into a regular
turtle and you'll immediately lose a life. You can avoid this by jumping. A signal that
the Shredder has almost been defeated is when he stops making clones. After a few hits,
his helmet will fall off, and then after a few more hits, he is dead.

Ending: Shredder falls to the floor and the Turtles evaccuate the Technodrome. The scene
cuts to the outside of the Technodrome, glowing bright red and then exploding. The
Technodrome is destroyed, and the following text is displayed in the foreground...

"Freaked the Foots, Mangled the Mousers, and Totalled the Technodrome. That's...
TURTLE POWER!! But what about the Shredder and Krang...!? Burned to toast? Vaporized to
milkshake? Or... Escaped to Dimension X??? Until we know, none of us can sleep safely in
our beds... er, shells!"

The game then cuts to a skyline in New York showing the credits of the game on a billboard as the
turtle blimp cruises by. After the credits, Shredder shows up and does his evil laugh...
